January 25, 2013

Whether  you want to be healthy or loose weight, food plays a very important part. By just reducing the food intake or skipping meals you cannot get permanent benefit. You rather need to have healthy food to get the desired benefit, which will last for long. Being of Indian origin, I decided to explore the Indian kitchen. Below is a list of few food stuffs, which when added to your india diet can help you to reduce weight:

Moong dal

One of the common grains used while making gravy. This dal(gravy) is full of many vitamin and rich minerals such as calcium, iron and potassium. Often it is advisable to replace any other grains with this one, since it is also in rich in proteins and fibre and one’s hunger craving can be reduced by just one cup of it. You can enjoy this gravy with indian bread or any other bread available in market

Curry leaves

A common leaf added in Indian gravy to give a beautiful aroma. In southern india dishes, it is also added in vegetables and foods made during morning breakfast. The health benefits of this leave is that it helps to reduce LDL levels in the body. It also aids in reducing fat deposits in the body.

Bitter gourd

One of the vegetables which I hated the most, but loved it when mom removed the bitter taste and fried it in Oil. Quite unhealthy but It was the only I ate those day but today I know the benefit of it. Besides in some ancient indian households, the juice extract from this is given to diabetes patient since it contains hypoglycaemic or insulin like properties that helps in reducing blood sugar levels.  This vegetable is an ideal low-calorie recipes that can be eaten as a vegetable soup or stew. Just Google and you should see various ways of cooking a healthy bitter gourd

Beetroot

Another food which tastes not so good but has got lot of benefits is Beetroot.  According to researches, beetroot juice gives the body the required stamina so that you can exercise longer and keep burning more calories. Beets purifies blood and renews it with minerals and natural sugars. They are also rich in potassium, folic acid and other fibers. Hence by drinking beetroot you get various benefits and at the same time reduce food.

Cauliflower

For some this vegetable might looks beautiful. Well yes. It does look good and at the same time it aids the body by providing lot of healthy benefits. Rich in indoles, glucosinolates and thiocyanates , cauliflower can easily remove the toxic waste in  your body.  So quick healthy cauliflower and enjoy the benefits of it

Raddish

Like other different types of vegetables available in market, this food helps you to remain full and satisfied. In addition to this benefits , it is recommended that cooked raddish can be eaten instead of rich or bread since it is starch rich vegetable.  Enjoy a fresh or cooked raddish. My favorites is a salad with chopped cucumber , onions and tomatoes.

Apart from the food listed above some of the common indian foods which also have medicinal benefits are Cardamom, Garlic, Chillies, Cinnamon and cloves, Honey etc. Some of this food are commonly used indian spices and common in almost all indian households.  Besides, the importance of some of indian food has been also recorded in ancient history and lot of present day ayurvedic medicines use one or other kind of extract from them. Being in a globalized world, you can easily access this ingredients anywhere across the world. Some of the above ingredients might be new to you, but once you start using them you will get used it. So stay healthy and be happy.
